Email Marketing Revealed - What is the Reason Behind Falling Response Rates?

26 Oct, 2008  |  under Email Marketing

When you do email marketing over a length of time, you might notice your response rates falling. Why does this happen and what can you do to prevent it? You can do this by avoiding doing things that will affect your response rates? So what are those things?

Well, firstly, you have to understand that there will be a few tire kickers among your list members. In fact, expect a significant proportion of them to be tire kickers. These people just want your free download that you used to get them to join your list. They don’t want anything else from you. So these people will either unsubscribe or stay on your list but never open your emails. This happens. You’ve got to learn to live with it as an email marketer.

Now, if your free gift does not deliver on what was promised, you can also expect your response rates to fall. But, if you over-deliver on your free gift, your response rates will actually see an upward curve. So over-deliver on your free download and you will start off your list building on a strong foothold.

Another reason is that over time, people get subscribed to many lists, particularly in the Internet marketing niche. It’s not at all uncommon for ‘work at home’ entrepreneurs to be subscribed to dozens of mailing lists pertaining to the work at home market. As sometimes it will be impossible to open all the emails, your emails ‘drown’ in the sea of emails these people receive. So they remain unopened.
